What is FRP?
FRP stands for Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic. These versatile panels are just as strong as they are lightweight. FRP Panels are the ideal construction material that offers the perfect combination of affordability and efficiency for a variety of applications. In addition to being affordable, the material also stays clean due to its natural rot, stain, mold and mildew resistance. This makes FRP perfect for any commercial, medical, public or agricultural setting.

FIRE-RATINGS FOR FRP
FRP wall and ceiling panels can differ based on the fire rating of wall and ceiling finish classification based on flame spread and smoke development. Flame spread is defined as the speed at which a fire spreads across the surface of a material. Smoke development is the amount of visibility in a given access route when a material is on fire and creating smoke.

Although building-code laws in the United States are set at state and local levels, most jurisdictions turn to national and global organizations like the International Code Council (ICC) or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Canada has adopted the National Building Code (NBC).

According to chapter eight, section 803.1.2, of the ICC's International Building Code (IBC), interior finish materials are grouped as follows:

ICC Classification
Flame Spread Index
Smoke Developed Index
Class A / Class I
0-25
0-450

Class B / Class II
26-75
0-450

Class C / Class III
76-200
0-450
Materials are commonly tested using the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Test Method E-84, also known as the tunnel test. Materials are placed in a horizontal tunnel and subjected to a gas flame. Based on performance in this test, the material is rated Class A, Class B, or Class C. NUDO offers FRP wall panels in all three classifications.

The placement of materials with specific fire ratings on interior walls and ceilings depends on occupancy classification, use designation, sprinklers, and location within a structure (see ICC table). If you have any questions regarding which type of classification you need for a particular building or renovation project, contact the local public safety office responsible for building / code enforcement.
